Workplace Bullying
Every workplace is a social organisation. Workforce consists of human beings who are by nature different from one another. In general, bullies are part of society. Workplace bullying has gradually become part of work culture. There is no specific definition to define this subject matter. It occurs in a variety of contexts and forms.
In very simple language it can be defined as persistent verbal and nonverbal aggression at work that includes personal attacks, social ostracism, and a multitude of other painful messages and hostile interactions. Moreover, there is some workplace which encourages bullying culture as that brings high level competition among the employees. It can be as well said that workplace bullies are workplace terrorists.
Workplace bullying occurs in many forms, like psychological abuse, physical abuse, and emotional abuse, verbal and non-verbal abuse. It has been noticed very often that bullies try to manipulate or destroy the victim’s work product and lower their morale and self-esteem. Many surveys and researches are conducted which draws conclusion that the most common tactics adopted by workplace bullies are
• Falsely accusing the target(s) of workplace mistakes
• The silent treatment
• Yell at the target(s) with the intent to intimidate
• Make insults based on race, gender, disability, national origin, etc.
• Characterize the target as incompetent or unintelligent
• Trivialize the target(s) work product
• Demean the target(s) in front of others
Workplace bullying exists in every workplace in various sizes and in shapes. Some basic types include those who yell at their victims without any reason and often abuse their targets verbally. The blocker tries to destroy the good work product of their targets and even tries to spoil the target’s reputation. The classic workplace bullies are backstabbers who spread ugly rumours and also gossip about the targets. The nitpickers would certainly find trivial faults in the work of the target and always try to prove the suggestions given by the target, as wrong or foolish.
Various studies have proved about some severe consequences if the workplace bullies keep harassing their targets. The employees who are targets often suffer with high levels of stress disorder, migraine headaches and depression and in worst cases suicidal tendencies are very common. Therefore, workplace bullying is a silent epidemic which affects the entire organisation so businesses should develop such type of organisational policies which strictly outline behaviours which are not acceptable in the office and government interferences are also needed.
