Two Tips To Bigger Profits

By on April 23, 2010

It’s no secret that the main purpose of a business is to generate profits for the investment, but far too many businesses lose sight of this prime target and thus are never able to generate the kind of profits that they potentially can. This goes especially true for small businesses, which lack shrewd business thinking. The first step towards gearing in more profits is to define your profit goals. If you have a clear cut idea of how much profit you want to make with your small business, then here are the top two ways to achieve your profit targets.

Review your pricing policy
Most small businesses succumb to the idea of under pricing their products and taking thinner profit margins, in order to sell more. It’s understandable that the small businesses face hard competition from larger firms, but to fight the competition under pricing the products is not the best solution. Most small businesses fear that increasing the price will shrivel their customer base overnight.

However, that’s not true and raising your price a little won’t cause any drastic drop in the demand for your product, but it will certainly give a real strong boost to your profits. For instance if you have currently been operating on 5% profit margin and you decide to raise the price of the product by just 1%, your profits will go up by 20%.

And that meager 1% hike in the price won’t cause your market share to shrink by more than 2-4%, which still leaves you with 16-18% more profits. So review your product pricing and think about making some marginal increases in the prices to garner huge profits.

Cut your costs
The other best way to increase profits for your small business is to cut down on the costs. Cutting costs is a better and a more effortless way to earning bigger profits without having to spend on product promotion and increase your sales. Here again let me explain it to you with an example.

Let’s say you’re current making 5% profits and you are able to cut down your costs by 5%, then your net profits will go up by 50% without having to spend on product promotion. This is definitely easier than having to increase your customer base by 50% to get the same increased profit.

There is one simple thing that becomes evident from these two tips about increasing your small business profits, that product promotion and increasing sales aren’t the only ways to increase profit earning.
