Tips for Conflict Resolution
Each one of us is unique and different and has our own way of looking at things. It is very natural that this may end in a conflict.
Conflicts in business are quite common but need to be resolved quickly and peaceably…if allowed to escalate can cause adverse results. There are several steps one needs to follow to enable conflict resolution.
Firstly make sure the problem is not allowed to escalate. Whatever the conflict may be or whoever the person may be confront it before things become too intense and confusing. If we give space for conflict and leave it to go you will end up with broken relationships and who knows you may even lose a key person from the company so beware.
Secondly try solving the problem in a neutral location even a nearby restaurant or a park may be fine. Get away from the problematic environment itself they may have a mind block and may not see things clearly. Brainstorm solutions, try to heal hurts and make sure that relationships still remain firm. It is very important to be optimistic.
Speak firmly, calmly and try to build a rapport for free conversation. Never sing about the past…remain in the present and try to solve the problem at hand. Avoid being loud or dominating and never ask anyone to become a different person. Requesting behavioral changes are fine but finding common ground in solving a problem is ideal. Do not make anyone feel low or do not let anyone assume you are being unfair. Listen carefully to both sides and then make the decision.
Once you decide on a solution put it in writing. Nothing is as effective as a written agreement and you always have something to fall back on if things go wrong again. So insist on putting the resolution in writing.
By resolving conflict effectively the team will be able to understand each other better, develop mutual respect and help individuals to sharpen their focus and view things clearly. But always remember a poor conflict resolution will lead to poor relationships, poor teamwork, broken relationships and ultimately poor performance. Hence it is very important to solve conflicts wisely and well.
