The Importance of Internal Communication

Organizations may a lot of stress on the importance of communicating well. However, when they talk of communication, it is mostly to the external audience. This would include existing and prospective clients, shareholders and stakeholders and also the public and policy makers.

There is also another kind of communication which is as important. This is internal communication, or communication within the organization.

When we talk about internal communication, it is generally interpreted as communicating within departments to co ordinate functions. Most organizations claim that they work closely with one another, and are constantly talking to each other.

Beyond the scope of routine functioning it is very important for everyone in the company to know where the company is headed, what are the changes going on and the latest news in the company. This is when internal communication comes into play.

Internal communication is especially important when there are many divisions in the company and it has many offices, some in different cities. Here, there is a need for everyone to be on the same page, and have access to the same amounts of information. They also need to know of new policy decisions, new senior members joining and also about the functioning in different offices.

Internal communication can be in the form of mass mails and department faxes. This is when common news is circulated to everyone, and they are kept up to date with the goings on in the company. This normally gets circulated as and when there is news to be shared.

Another very popular and useful way of dissemination of information is the use of the company newsletter. This is for internal circulation only.

The newsletter gives out information on what is the latest in the company. It tells you of new people coming on board, if there are any new offices and divisions being set up, and also of the performance of the company. It also profiles any employee who has performed superlatively. It is a good way for people to express their views, opinions and also give suggestions. It can also be a good way for people to spend a few minutes enjoying lighter issues.
