Talent Acquisition – Flexible Working and Work Life Balance

Submitted on February 23, 2010 by 41 views

When trying to make a successful career and have a satisfying life, people generally find it a tough act to master. For one, there are a lot more demands on the employee these days from the workplace, than what they were a decade or even a few years earlier. One reason, definitely, is the global workforce that is always engaged, 24/7, where information technology has stretched work beyond traditional limits. Work hours have extended indefinitely with the advent of the mobile phone and broadband connectivity.

This trend of increae in working hours that has caught up with the corporate sector is a tool that cuts both ways – in a positive way, employees would be able to enjoy the benefits of flexible working, which cuts down on commuting. However, on the negative side, work seems to be never ending, which tends to take the sheen off the positives of telecommuting. Working from home, further, is not always possible and employees do have to be at organizations to get some crucial work done.

The trend towards flexible working is only expected to get refined into a further process that hinges on the broader issue of work life balance. The entire idea of working from home is directed towards the objective of having an enjoyable personal life along with career success. Hence, it wouldn’t be just telecommuting or working from home anymore but the expectations would be on the core concept of work life balance.

As the economy recovers after the recession, and as orders keep pouring in faster, there would only be a more intense competition for the best employees and organizations would want to possess the best of talents in their human resources. With the hunt for the best employee gathering in pace, the only way for organizations to go about their talent acquisition business would be to focus on work life balance as the unique selling point. Both talent acquisition as well as talent retention initiatives would have to offer work life balance as the one reason why employees should work for their companies.

It is up to the management to design work processes and HR policies in such a way that employees find enough reason to stay on with the job and grow with the organization.
