Submitted on March 5, 2010 by 51 views

Entrepreneur is a common word describing the business man. In other words Entrepreneurship can be defined as “a person engaged in range of activities viz. production, procurement, marketing, selling and thus earning a profit and creating a wealth”.

With the growth of population and urbanization, pollution has increased. The word like global warming has become household words. Every NGO, social organization, are pushing themselves to work towards decreasing pollution and save our beautiful earth.

In the same quest, a new branch of studies is gaining momentum known as “Social Entrepreneurship.” Social entrepreneurship is nothing but the entrepreneur working towards the society along with the business. This seems to be colliding with Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR). However, CSR and social entrepreneurship are two different areas of operation. Social Entrepreneurship can be defined as “a person working towards the social environment and thus creating the wealth.” In other words, social entrepreneurship is a combination of passion to work good towards the social environment and business like discipline like innovation, determination etc.

The social Entrepreneur harness entrepreneurship skill to do social good. Here the social environment not only means the environment or the atmosphere, but also includes the society we live in. Discussing about the social entrepreneurship few cases comes to my mind.

1) There was a period when drugs were made very expensive which were affordable only to high society people. Recognizing the need of the poor individual, few social entrepreneurs came up and decided to produce drugs for poor, thus doing good to the society.
2) In recent times, many engineering companies are advising to plant a tree for each unit of product recycled. Thus doing well to society.
3) Government and many private agencies are promoting the use of renewable sources of energy for instance: solar or wind energy.

Above mentioned are successful attempts towards practicing Social entrepreneurship and there can be many such cases of Social Entrepreneurship.

With the increase in problems in the society, the world we live in, the need for social entrepreneurship is going to increase day by day. A small help from an entrepreneur can be a big help for the individual, society or the environment.
