Managerial Decision Making: An Art or Science
Effective management is the backbone of every organisation. It is all about doing the right things at the right time. Globalisation and liberalisation have made the business world very dynamic. Managerial effectiveness has become one of the vital aspects for the organisations .
It is often believed that managerial effectiveness is an inborn quality but the reality is different. Managerial effectiveness can be learnt and with practice and also be perfected.
Effective decision making is an integral part of managerial effectiveness. Managers need to take many decisions which are a part of their daily work routine. Effective managers make decisions only after making systematic analysis of the entire issue. Moreover, a manager should able to distinguish between a right decision and a quick decision and must always focus on taking the right decision.
The first step of effective decision making process involves identifying and defining the core issue of the present problem. Managers need to spend quality time in analysing the core factor of the issue rather than looking at the effects of the problem.
Secondly, a manager needs to gather all relevant information regarding the problem and at the same time identifying all the possible available alternatives which is an important aspect of effective decision making. Even considering the limitations is one of the important factors. Hence, thorough analysis is very vital and also considered to be the deciding factor.
The third most important factor after analysing certain crucial factors is the selection of the appropriate alternative. Mostly the managers use their qualifications, experience and also intuition to select the best possible option which would hold very little risk and would certainly be beneficial for the organisation.
In the fourth step, the selected decision is implemented or put into practice. Decisions are only effective when it is implemented. The managers need to allocate the right job to the right person to get the desired result.
The last and the final step are all about obtaining the feedback. The evaluation is also important which helps to get the actual result and can also differentiate with the desired result. Some decisions need to be changed in the course of time if there is some lacking. It can be very well said that managerial decision making is neither science nor art it is all about the quality of farsightedness of the managers.
