Just in Time – An Effective Manufacturing Strategy
Just in Time-what does it mean?
Just in time is a strategy which is intended to rationalize the manufacturing operations of a company, by eliminating all the wastes and striving for a continuous improvement in the productivity. The main aim of JIT manufacturing is that all the manufacturing processes shall be completed just on time.
History of JIT-
JIT philosophy was actually a find of Taiichi Ohno, of Japan. Ohno had developed this philosophy in 1970’s and perfected the same while working with the manufacturing plants of Toyota. Ohno is actually called as “Father of JIT”. Toyota was bowled over by the advantages of JIT as it was able to meet all the obstacles through the JIT approach of focusing on people, systems and plants. Toyota think-tank stared working and they realized that the only way they can achieve success with JIT is with employees support. Each and every employee in Toyota should be committed and involved in the process in order to attain maximum output by streamlining the processes.
Benefits of JIT:
There are many advantages for a business to adopt a JIT technique:
- Improvement in the relationship with suppliers
- Multi skilled employees are identified and used
- Reducing the manufacturing and production lot sizes
- Striking at the core of any problems associated with manufacturing processes
- Responsive to the consumer needs
- Eliminating wastages of various kinds such as inventory waste waste from the processes, time waste, waste arising out of
over production etc. - Preventing any sort of breakdown by maintaining the equipments during the idle time of machinery and workers
- Maximum output is derived by streamlining the processes
- Enables to increase the innovativeness in the company
- Synchronization of the supply with the production demand in order to ensure the optimal amount of inventory at any time
- Improving quality by aiming at zero defects
The primary goal for any JIT is to eliminate all the non value adding tasks and thus striving to achieve the maximum output on time. Once the company is through with applying JIT philosophy in their organization, it realizes the competitive advantage that it has vis-à-vis their competitors.
