Guide To Food Label

It is a paradox that marketing information on labels on items of daily consumption are meant for the consumer, and they are most often the most incomprehensible part of the bargain that people make when buying grocery or any kind of article from the market.

These labels at times supply information that is inadequate, and at other instances, the information is more than what is needed for a complete comprehension of facts. Perhaps the following guide could help:

As per the accepted standards, all consumable items, including liquor, must have a list of ingredients on the label. The consumer should be informed as to what he or she is going in for. Several people could complain that they did not get what they paid for after opening the product, or could complain that they believed the package contained something else, or in some cases, customers could be allergic to some ingredients. The European Union has strict rules to display what the packet contains.

At the end of the day, the point to be kept in mind is that all the hulla bulla is usually about not getting fat. Most of the craze for being healthy is about being slim and skinny and people are aware that consuming sugar could be the antithesis of all their efforts. The amount of sugar that the product contains, or incase if it does not contain any ‘added sugar’, or any more sweetness than it is supposed to be mentioned on the label. Artificial sweeteners are often used in such cases.

The concern about using food made from genetically  modified crop has gained currency in the past few years, even the use of pesticides has raised eyebrows around the world, and now customers want a detailed description of all this on the label. Food labels should contain an account of the nutrition that the food product contains, including the number of calories you could gain by its consumption along with an appropriate measure of the vitamins and minerals it contains. All ingredients should be in an appropriate ratio, the ratio should be mentioned on the label.

This would be essential to maintain a balanced diet which would also include proportions of fat and protein. Food labels are the best way to gauge the appropriateness of any food item, they are the scales against which one’s health is weighed.
