Employee Discipline- A Must For All Organizations
Nothing left loose ever does anything creative. No horse gets anywhere until he is harnessed. No steam ever drives anything until it is confined. No man ever grows unless he is disciplined.
Discipline is an inevitable correlate of organization. To be organized means to be disciplined and vice verse. The behavior of an employed is at the root of all discipline in an organization. Every manager wants this behavior to be in conformity with the required system which he has prescribed in order to achieve the organizational goals.
But not infrequently we find employees deviating from this required system. The reason is that they have their own unique individual system of behavior which they cannot easily give up when they enter as members of an organization. It is at this point, that many employee- employer relations and of individual adjustments arises.
Causes of Indiscipline: It is very difficult to prepare an exhaust list of the reasons which lead employees to be indiscipline. In fact, a number of social, economic, cultural and political reasons contribute to indiscipline in an organization.
Few of the reasons are: Ineffective leadership which cannot control, coordinate and motivate workers, Low wages and poor working conditions, Lack of promotional opportunities due to which people feel stagnated, Unfair management practices, Uninteresting work and unfair management practices, Defective communication system and lack of timely redressal of worker’s grievances, Lack of worker’s education and drunkenness and family problems, Outside political influence and excessive work pressure and absence of any code of conduct to regulate behavior on both sides.
Discipline may be of two types: Positive and negative. Positive or self-discipline is the best. This refers to an organizational atmosphere in which subordinates willingly abide by rules which they consider fair.
The technique followed by the management to achieve this type of discipline includes positive motivational activities such as praise, participation and incentive pay.
Negative or punitive discipline is one in which management has to exert pressure or hold out threat by imposing penalties on wrongdoers. When this pressure becomes increasingly sever each time a man is discipline, it is called “progressive” or “corrective” discipline.
