Dealing with Difficult People at Workplace

Every workplace has a variegated set of people and there are definitely some who are really difficult to deal with. They can belong to a category which is continuously attacking you, or misbehaving with you or speaking ill of you, while there can be a group who is always interested in challenging or undercutting your contributions or never takes the deadlines and commitments seriously.

There can be people who rather than putting in efforts, love to criticize the hard work put in by others. Dealing with anyone, no matter to what category s/he belongs, requires a lot of perseverance, confidence and professional approach.

It is essential to deal with impossible people at work because living with same kind of treatment and behaviour is not a long term solution to the problem and it is always good to take the control of the situation before it gets worse.

To deal with such workplace problems, at first a person should try to introspect the real cause of problem because it is essential to know that who is a bigger trouble your personal ego and over reaction or the other person.

One should also try to analyse that has something like this ever happened in past too, and if yes, how did you deal with it and what kind of behaviour allows the person on the side to take you for granted.

Communication is the key to solve majority of problems, hence it’s always advisable to approach the other person and try solving it out with healthy and positive discussion. If there is no change in the behaviour, one should try approaching the other person again, so as to check if follow up discussion is required and if the other person is not comfortable with the behaviour/ act exhibited by you.

If still the actions are not supportive, it is alright to confront the person. This can be done at an individual level or one can involve other members of the workplace too, especially those who have been aware of your situation from start and to an extent share the same views about the person.

If the circumstances persist one can maintain a distance with the person and if at all possible, one can take up the matter with higher authorities.
